I have been told to “Shine on”!

The Shine On Award was created by senior bloggers, to celebrate and promote the blogs of fellow bloggers and to show appreciation by nominating them. Once you have been nominated, you’ve received the award.

As is usually the case, to accept the award, you have to fufil a few steps and pass on the baton so to speak. The rules to accept the award are as follows:

1. Display the award logo on your blog.
2. Link back to the person who nominated you.
3. State 7 things about yourself
4. Nominate 15 other bloggers for this award and link to them.
5. Notify those bloggers of the nomination and the award requirements.

So here goes…

I have been kindly nominated by Stephanie from Stephanie-isms ( Thank you, Stephanie! Go check out her blog for fun and quirky observations on life!

7 Things about myself
1. I take bellydance classes every week. I have been learning this for close to 2 years now and I love it! I like the grace, elegance and muscle control that is required by this dance form.
2. I used to be a bit of a runner in my school days. I stopped running after my junior college days, but recently I am trying to incorporate it back into my life as a way to keep fit and connect with nature. But as luck would have it my running shoes decided now is a good time to give up on me and the sole came apart. I need to get new shoes!!
3. I have been trying out meditation recently in order to become more calm and mindful. Not sure how well it is working yet, but I do constantly tell myself to remain in the present and be calm these days. It is so much easier when you are not fretting about things all the time…
4. I have recently taken an interest in poetry. I used to read poetry and write my own poems in my early teens, but the interest sort of dwindled away as I grew older and less angst-y. Now that I seem to be having a lot of angst back in my life, I have re-discovered the therapeutic effect of poems.
5. I like reading Children’s literature from time to time. Enid Blyton (my first love) and J.K. Rowling remain my all-time favourite authors.
6. I love travelling! Like really a lot! I have to get out of the country 3-4 times a year. I travel with my husband, my friends and my family. I am yet to travel on my own and I hear it is a liberating experience but have not gathered the guts to do so yet. I am not sure my mum will let me either!
7. I love Mexican food. I like the blend of flavours and textures it has – the spice, the tangy-ness, the crispy bits and soft chewy ones… Love nachos with cheese especially!

15 other bloggers (in no particular order)

1. Far From Done
2. wombwarrior
3. Married to Italy
4. My Top Fives
5. Inconceivable
6. Latte and Cake
7. Life after 50

My Toy Story

The toys that saw me through most of my childhood were my Barbie ™ dolls (and one measly Ken™ doll). I had quite a collection of them with assorted accessories and thingamagigs that came along in each set. Each time I did fairly well in my exams, my Dad got me a new set. Come to think of the collection that I did have, I must have done pretty well after all (well, I didn’t flunk out in any case)… They came in many shapes and forms, varying in features and ethnicity – I had mostly the standard Caucasian blonde, but I also had an African American and an Indian one (to acquire this one I had to practically roll around on the shop floor in a tantrum on our visit to India).

I would have liked to have collected Barbies of other ethnicity as well, now that I think about it, but my tastes and ideas were not as cultured and discerning at 10, not to mention the rolling tantrums I would have needed to have thrown in different cities to have gotten them… (lol no offense Dad but you were not as forthcoming with Barbies dolls back then – you thought them a waste of space ).

When my Barbie dolls were not busy having their hair cut and heads ripped off by my lil’ brother (brothers everywhere they are the same, aren’t they, ladies?), they were engaged in fascinating tea parties and huge dramas to rival Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, all directed by yours truly. I was a child with a huge imagination and plenty of time (sorry Mum, those times you thought I was studying? I was secretly directing plays for my Barbies – sure explains my PSLE scores eh?). My most enjoyable hours were spent with my Barbie dolls, to be sure.

As for the link between my favourite plaything and what I am now as an adult (when did I get so old??), I still do have an over-active imagination, though they are now often spent worrying about unlikely events! But seriously, yes, I still very much like creating stories and envisioning and conceptualising things. However, I am not a film director, script writer or novelist career- wise (maybe I should go down that path?). I do these creative-like things as a hobby and it remains among my most pleasurable activities.

It is only after I have written this Daily Prompt post, that I realise just how much of my childhood nature I have retained. Creative, imaginative, easily distracted, emotional, passionate… Interesting…

Happiness is…

A chocolate treat!

I know I haven’t blogged in a while (in a looong while in fact). I’m still waiting for the proper inspiration to strike. Not to mention life’s been a bit hectic recently. I have been, however, reading up on the blogs I follow, just barely though (my inbox is flooded!). And I am getting inspired. So I hope to crank something out in the next week… Meanwhile, I shall enjoy my chocolate treat!

Inspire Me Wednesday – Prayer

Prayer has been said to have healing effects for people, regardless of their belief or non-belief in God/religion. Many a times a lot of us have prayed for something or the other. We may have been disappointed several times when we have not gotten what we have been asking for, sometimes despite repeated attempts. Dispirited, we may ask – What happened to the power of prayer?

Susan Jeffers, in her book Embracing Uncertainty – Achieving peace of mind as we face the unknown, said that

“We have to learn to pray not with a sense of wishing, hoping, yearning or entitlement, but with a sense of trust, gratitude and purpose.”

In other words, we pray for God to give us the wisdom and strength to accept and handle what Life gives us. She also provided a lovely prayer for us to keep in mind and repeat to ourselves daily.

“Dear God, I trust that no matter what happens in my life, it is for my highest good. And no matter what happens in the lives of those I love, it is for their highest good. From all things you put before us, we shall become stronger and more loving people. I am grateful for all the beauty and opportunity you put into my life. And in all that I do, I shall seek to be a channel for your love.”

This prayer resonates with me and every time I read it to myself, I feel a sense of peace and trust that all is happening for my good – even if it doesn’t seem to be that way at the moment.

Here is to a peaceful and blissful day to all of you

Monthly Musings-September

It’s all bout Fashion this month

1. What is your most comfortable outfit?
Leggings and a loose-fitting top, with a scarf thrown around.

2. What is your latest favourite fashion item?
I am currently obsessed with collecting scarves of all shapes, sizes and colours!
Used to be shoes and bags, but I have temporarily put a stop to those – there is no more space in my shoe and bag cupboards!

3. How often do you feel pretty and what makes you feel so? (question contributed by LynAn from – Thanks Lyn!)
I feel pretty when I have a face clear of zits and I look fresh in the morning. It is such a nice feeling to have a good hair day too… As for how often this happens, about 3-4 times a week perhaps. Not too bad, I guess….

What about you people? What are your answers to these? I’d love to hear them! I know, I am nosy…

What others questions will be good for my next monthly musings?
